Why you should buy this book
Take five minutes once a week to step outside your business model,
your career or your startup idea and check that you’ve got all the bases covered.
A business is comprised of an array of opportunities.
Are you aware of them all? Do you know which ones are best for you?
Are you optimising what you’ve got, be it your leadership strengths or your great idea?
Growth, in both business and life, is about momentum.
This book will help you maintain it.
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, computer markets were changing rapidly and the company had lost its way. The first thing he did was slash 90% of existing product development and draw up a simple alternative plan. Four market segments; four products. We know what they were. They all started with the letter i. Everything else was eliminated and Apple was reborn. Often, a few ideas can be better than a lot.
That story appeared in the last chapter of our last book, 60 Second Recharge. Since then, many simple business models have built up massive traction in the marketplace — Uber, Airbnb and Soundcloud to name a few. Apple, with its uncomplicated product architecture, has become one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Success is not necessarily dependent on proprietary technology. Most enterprises use systems and software developed by firms other than their own. Driving success is their adherence to basic economic and behavioural concepts. They are often less like inventors and more like drivers. They take existing systems— like the cloud or apps — apply them to their own vision and drive them to market. The language of business may have changed but the basic principles have not. Simple notions like convenience remain a key source of competitive advantage. Make something more convenient and customers will use it.
That’s how we’ve designed this book. No chapter will take more than five minutes to read. There are 52 of them. That’s one a week. You’ll be finished in a year and you won’t have noticed it go by. You will, however, have reviewed your business and your life from multiple perspectives and come up with ideas you might otherwise have missed. Is that a big statement? Maybe, but we’ve added cartoons to lighten the load. We’ve put some of the ideas onto iTunes so you can listen on the way to work. Others are videos you can watch on YouTube. Some have downloads from the Management Reboot website. For convenience, QR codes will connect your mobile device to any of them.
But here’s the point. Take five minutes once a week to step outside your business model, your career or your startup idea and check that you’ve got all the bases covered. A business is comprised of an array of opportunities. Are you aware of them all? Do you know which ones are best for you? Are you optimising what you’ve got, be it your leadership strengths or your great idea? Growth, in both business and life, is about momentum. This book will help you maintain it.

About the authors
Alan Hargreaves
Alan Hargreaves specialises in simplifying complex business problems. Originally a financial journalist and broadcaster, he spent 35 years in financial services and business consulting. His approach to management is highly effective, yet inspiringly simple. It focuses on real issues rather than strategic principles. His innovative mix of personal and collaborative action brings immediate traction.
Alan is the author of the management books, 60 Second Recharge, published by Wilkinson Publishing and Recharge, published by John Wiley and Sons.
He is an economics graduate from the University of Sydney. He worked for 20 years in international finance and has built businesses in Hong Kong, Singapore and New York.
Since returning to Australia, he has managed his own private investment trust. Alan has worked extensively with business audiences through both radio and television. His private equity and advisory services span IT, media, property, finance, communications and retail.
Alan is regularly engaged as a speaker, consultant and mentor. His passions are business, boats and breeding horses.
Patrick Cook
Iconic Australian cartoonist Patrick Cook is best known for his weekly commentary in the news magazine, The Bulletin, and more recently for his satirical essays and cartoons in the Australian edition of the The Spectator.
Patrick’s style has had a huge influence on many Australian artists. A Cook cartoon is immediately recognisable. The style is both minimalist and organic, the humour quirky. The subject matter can range from his homicidal wine-swilling koalas to overwrought politicians and social climbers.
Books by Patrick include Hot and Wet, Ship of Fools and The Great Big Cook Book.
Cook’s satire considers nothing to be sacred. Unlike many others of his generation, he avoids an obvious political agenda, making his work consistently unpredictable.
Starting in 2011, Patrick collaborated with business writer Alan Hargreaves to produce the mix of business humour and insight that characterises their regular blog, Recharge.
